Not you. Not me. In my trade material I try real hard to tell you what you need to know to make a go of your global trading company. But I don't tell you everything. And there are two good reasons for that. I don't know everything; and, you don't need to know everything. What you do need to know, however, is who does. You don't have to know how a truck runs or even when a truck runs to line up transportation for your supplier. But you do need to know what services you should be providing and who are the people that can help you provide those services. Let's look at just two of the important ones. The Freight Forwarder I've discussed the importance of freight forwarders a lot in my training material and in past issues of this ezine. This time, however, I'm going to show you how different kinds of freight forwarders can help you. There are two different kinds of freight forwarders: the Federal Maritime Commission Forwarder and the Air Freight Forwarder. As you might expect, the Federal Maritime Commission Forwarder or FMC handles ocean shipments. To receive the FMC designation, he must post a performance bond in order to keep his license. Although you can make lots of money shipping by air, truly impressive cargoes can only be shipped by sea. And when you're dealing in this kind of money, it's a good idea to get an expert to help you. That expert is the Federal Maritime Commission Forwarder. Okay, let's look at what he can do for you. First of all, he can provide quotes of ocean freight rates as well as quotes for truck or rail rates to get products to the port. Once you've determined the best freight shippers, your forwarder can arrange to have the goods shipped. One of the best things about freight forwarders, in my opinion (because I hate paperwork) is that he will prepare necessary documents you need for an international shipment. In addition, he will verify that the shipment conforms to the standards set down in the letter of credit. Basically, the FMC's job is to make sure your products are moved promptly and safely to their ultimate destination. Some new traders (I know, cause I hear from them afterwards!) don't call a freight forwarder until they're ready to ship. Bad idea. Bad, BAD idea! You can't really process a shipment correctly unless you know in advance all costs related to shipment of your product. If you don't contact a forwarder until you're ready to ship, that suggests you pulled a deal together without knowing all the costs. Not a good idea. Another reason (as if you needed one) to contact a forwarder in advance is to determine what kind of documentation is needed for this particular product to this particular port. It may take some time to get your order and paperwork together and if you promised quick delivery, your buyer will not be pleased. Worse, you probably won't get paid. Of course, better than any of these reasons is the importance of knowing in advance the man or woman you're dealing with. You can find freight forwarders in the Yellow Pages under "Freight Forwarder" or you can contact your local chamber of commerce, state chamber of commerce or just call 1-800-USA-TRADE and ask them. Make an appointment with a freight forwarder in advance to talk about your goals. Decide if he's someone you can work with. You don't have to tell him everything about your plans but talk about a product type or area of the world and see what he has to tell you about documentation requirements and any special shipping concerns. You may find that your freight forwarder is part of a larger network with offices around the world. This can work to your advantage. Or you may decide to go with a small one- or two- office freight forwarding company. Whoever you choose, make sure to get a printed price sheet of the freight forwarder's costs for service. This is critical if you're going to determine final cost of the product. ************************************************************* Interested in Learning How to Import and Export? Click Here To Read About Our "Import Export Training" Package ************************************************************* The Air Freight Forwarder There are a lot of similarities between the air forwarder and his FMC cousin. Basically, he's just a freight forwarder who specializes in air shipments. Like the FMC forwarder, the air freight forwarder will quote you rates, other shipping charges and then make arrangements to have the product shipped. He will also prepare documentation (hooray!) and make sure that all documentation conforms to the specifications contained in the letter of credit. A difference between air forwarders and FMC forwarders is regulation. While surface forwarders are regulated by the Federal Maritime Commission, there is no similar federal agency regulating the air forwarders. Just about anybody can say he's an air freight forwarder. The good news is the airlines operate an organization called the International Air Transport Association which regulates who can act as an IATA agent for the airlines. There are lots and lots of air forwarders who are not affiliated with the IATA and most are just fine but all other things being equal, I would suggest going with an air forwarder who carries the initial IATA after the company name. Some air forwarders actually operate their own aircraft and some book through their IATA flights. Some even do both. Just like the ocean freight forwarder, I suggest you set up a meeting with the air forwarder and, among other things, ask him about an IATA affiliation as well as connections with other international companies or networks. Find someone you can work with and follow your "gut instinct" in determining the best forwarder for your needs. ************************************************************* ======================================================= WHO really makes money in Real Estate? The Seller makes money. The Real Estate agent, Bank, Appraiser, Lawyer, Insurance Agent, and even the City, County and State (tax collectors) make money -- but -- the BUYER pays (even if the 'lucky' buyer buys a distressed fixer upper for no money down, he pays). But, each year, poor souls across this country who want to 'Get Rich in Real Estate' fall for the same old sucker-pitch and pay out millions upon millions of dollars for courses, tapes, manuals and books on 'How To' -- buy distressed properties -- buy with No Money Down -- buy tax lien properties -- buy fixer uppers. Real Estate BUYERS are the ones who have to make the monthly payments (if they can get the financing to begin with); pay the interest; pay the taxes and assessments; pay the cost of upkeep and maintenance; and pay the commission to the Real Estate agent when they decide to sell. (How do you get rich "paying?") Doesn't logic tell you that to make money in Real Estate, you MUST be on the 'selling' side of the deal? But ...
