In this issue I'm going to address a few ways to break into service markets. Of course, there's a big difference in breaking into markets if your product is a service rather than a hard good or commodity. There may be surface similarities but dig a little deeper and you'll see very distinct approaches. Let me explain. Use of representatives such as distributors is a market entry method widely used by goods providers and, yes, service exporters can hire distributors also. Unlike the transfer of goods, however, services are usually transferred directly from one person to another so the role of the "distributor" in this instance is quite different from his role as a hard goods distributor. The in-country service representative can't take title to a product so he is normally used instead to study market conditions, search for and qualify sales leads. The actual "sale" usually takes place when the "exporter" actually arrives in the foreign country to negotiate and close the deal and often provide the service as well. The representative's role is to maintain enthusiasm in the buyer and deal with his concerns after the U.S. service exporter returns home. In this sense, the in-country representative is much like a project consultant. Project consultancy is an example of a service export in its purest form. This is simply when an overseas buyer purchases the services of a U.S. service exporter for a year or less. Engineering and design are two examples of export services that use project consultancy. My favorite because I do it every day is electronic commerce. This is simply the transfer of information and data via telecommunications which these days usually means the Internet although it can also include telephone and fax. If you're an exporter and a computer user, you may not realize that the passing of information over international borders is exporting. The advantage? For one thing, concerns over shipping and insurance disappear and if you're using a credit card and small quantities, you can avoid the hassles associated with the letter of credit or the vagaries of currency transfer. If you're marketing a service in the U.S., it can be very easy to become an "exporter" of that same service. Today there are individuals and small groups of specialists who form alliances to assist their clients and never leave their home country. For instance, a U.S.-based agent can help a foreign company deal with legal and pricing considerations, sign up representatives and even establish a post-sales support network right here in the U.S. If you are representing a small or mid-sized company that produces a hard product or intellectual property and that company doesn't want to get involved in the expense of exporting, you can advise them to make use of licensing agreements. Under this arrangement, a foreign company is granted certain rights to patents, copyrights, and trademarks in return for royalty or cash payments by the foreign country. While this can be a lucrative avenue for companies, it's important to check out the laws and regulations regarding licensing agreements in your target country. The Seller makes money. The Real Estate agent, Bank, Appraiser, Lawyer, Insurance Agent, and even the City, County and State (tax collectors) make money -- but -- the BUYER pays (even if the 'lucky' buyer buys a distressed fixer upper for no money down, he pays). But, each year, poor souls across this country who want to 'Get Rich in Real Estate' fall for the same old sucker-pitch and pay out millions upon millions of dollars for courses, tapes, manuals and books on 'How To' -- buy distressed properties -- buy with No Money Down -- buy tax lien properties -- buy fixer uppers. Real Estate BUYERS are the ones who have to make the monthly payments (if they can get the financing to begin with); pay the interest; pay the taxes and assessments; pay the cost of upkeep and maintenance; and pay the commission to the Real Estate agent when they decide to sell. (How do you get rich "paying?") Doesn't logic tell you that to make money in Real Estate, you MUST be on the 'selling' side of the deal? But ... How can you 'sell' something if you don't own (buy) it first?? Find out ..."How To Get Rich SELLING REAL ESTATE YOU DON'T OWN!"
